At Harbor Behavioral Health & Wellness, biofeedback and neurofeedback are often utilized to assist clients in progressing towards their treatment goals. Recognizing the connection between the mind and body, can be a powerful aspect of treatment and promotes significant levels of progress when introduced in therapy. Psychoeducation and feedback tools can be combined in therapy sessions to promote increase in emotional regulation, mood stability, relaxation, and improved neurological functioning.
Biofeedback is a technique where one learns to control bodily functions that are often automatic and involuntary. Electronic monitoring is used in biofeedback in order to train clients to voluntarily control these functions.
Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that measures brain waves to produce a signal that can be used as feedback to teach self-regulation of brain function. Often times neurofeedback training sessions train the brain at which frequencies it should be functioning at, causing the brain to automatically synchronize with these frequencies. Over the course of treatment, the brain will learn to operate in the appropriate frequencies on its own.
